Scholarship
The Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology (DFBSST) is an endowment fund which provides scholarships to African-American undergraduate students who enroll in scientific or technical fields of study at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

[ Award Determination ] [ Obtaining a Scholarship Application ]   The amount of the scholarships awarded each student is determined by the DFBSST Scholarship Committee. Scholarships are based on merit and financial need. Scholarship awards are up to $2,000 per year.

Scholarship applications are currently available at the following schools:

Bennett College, Morehouse University, Clark Atlanta University, Morgan State University, Elizabeth City State Univ, North Carolina A&T State Univ,
Fisk University, Prairie View A&M University, Florida A&M University, Southern University, Fort Valley State College, Spelman College, Hampton University, Tennessee State University, Howard University, Tuskegee University, Langston University, Wilberforce University, Lincoln University (PA), and Xavier University of Louisiana

Scholarship applications become available April 15th and must be submitted by June 30th. Scholarship recipients will be notified in early September.

The Common Application Overview

The Common Application process is becoming popular for students applying for college. There are about 255 common application members of colleges anduniversities. Many students who are applying to various colleges and don¡¦t want to keep creating duplication of information, difference essays, shortanswers, etc are using the process. The purpose of the Common Application is to serve students by facilitating and simplifying the college application process for those seeking admission to member institutions. In so doing, the Common Application introduces candidates to a broader range of institutions than they might otherwise consider, provides immediate access to application forms, and may be used as an educational tool in preparing students for the college selection and application process.

If you have already applied at a particular college or universities do not duplicate the process on the common application website. You only need one application submitted per student to a college.

TRANSCRIPTS, LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATIONS, etc:

High School Transcripts, Letters of Recommendations, Counselor Report, Secondary Report, need to be submitted to the colleges/universities prior or by theregistration or scholarship deadline. If you have not done so already, students should request them from the necessary persons or institutions ASAP. The clock isticking and coming to a fast end. Please remember that you are competing with students from across the country or state and your letters should reflect you in a verystrong way or not be average in meaning or tone.

Postdoctoral Fellowships for Academic Diversity - Deadline: November 3, 2023

The Postdoctoral Fellowship for Academic Diversity Program is a competitive program whose goal is to increase the diversity of the community of scholars devoted to academic research. We seek to attract promising researchers and educators from different backgrounds, races, ethnic groups, and other diverse populations whose life experience, research experience and employment background will contribute significantly to the academic mission. Fellowships are available for postdoctoral training in all areas of study at Penn. Successful candidates will receive mentored scholarly and research training as well as courses and workshops to enhance their research success skills and prepare them for a faculty position in a major university.

Eligibility

• Graduate students from PENN and other institutions who have completed or will complete their requirements for Ph.D. by the Fellowship start date.
• Postdoctoral scholars from other institutions who have completed their dissertation within the last three years.
• Professional applicants (M.D., D.M.D., V.M.D., J.D., etc) within a year of completing their post-degree professional training.
• Candidates must be US citizens or permanent residents.
• Postdocs, residents and fellows who currently have a position at Penn are ineligible for this program.

Awards: Fellows receive a stipend of $43,000 in year 1 with $2,000 increments in years 2 and 3, as well as annual allowances for travel ($2,000) and research ($5,000), and a one-time relocation expense of $5,000. The University also provides a medical, vision, dental and life insurance benefits package. Successful candidates will receive highly mentored scholarly and research training as well as courses and workshops to enhance their research success skills and prepare them for a faculty position in a major university.
Start date will be arranged in consultation with the faculty mentor but can be as early as January 2, 2014.

2024 Ron Brown Scholarship -- Deadlines: November 1st and, January 9 th

The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Current college students are not eligible to apply.

Each year, a minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of $40,000.

Application Deadline

The Ron Brown Scholar Program currently has two deadlines for applications (students must be current high school seniors at the time of their application):

November 1st - application will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program AND forwarded to a select and limited number of additional scholarship providers.

January 9th - final postmarked deadline in order to be considered for only the Ron Brown Scholar Program ONLY.

Application materials must be mailed in one packet. Transcripts and letters of recommendation should not be sent under separate cover. Incomplete, e-mailed or faxed applications will not be considered.

NNCI Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Nanotechnology

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs are an excellent way for undergraduates to become acquainted with scientific research and graduate student life. REU programs typically consist of an intensive 10 week summer research experience at a university different than your own. Most research centers sponsor REU-like programs as part of their education and outreach efforts.
The NNCI does not offer a network-wide REU program, but many of the NNCI sites conduct their own separate programs and the details for these are listed below. You must apply to each program separately.

The NNCI REU program will have a networked NNCI REU Convocation. The Convocation is an end of program technical conference (2-3 days) held at one of the sites. CNF will host in August 2019. Participants from NNCI REU site programs will travel to Cornell University to present their results in poster and oral formats and network with their peers. This is a wonderful culmination of the research experience. Most NNCI sites listed below will participate in the Convocation.

Graduating seniors may submit a portfolio of their art or writing for consideration in the Scholastic Awards. Through generous support of our sponsors, the following Portfolio Awards include a scholarship to encourage our students to continue their creative studies in college and beyond.

Gold Medal Portfolio 

Our highest honor, Gold Medal Portfolio, is given to sixteen graduating seniors–eight writers and eight artists–whose portfolio of work exemplifies the Scholastic Awards’ core criteria: originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal vision or voice.
Scholarships of $10,000 are presented to 16 students earning a Gold Medal for their portfolio.

Silver Medal with Distinction Portfolio

A Silver Medal with Distinction is given to art and writing portfolios of thirty graduating seniors whose exceptional works received recognition at the national level.
Scholarships of $1,000 are presented to select students earning this award.

Eligibility

Only graduating high school seniors may submit portfolios.
Art Portfolios should contain a series of 8 distinct works that communicate a single cohesive idea or visual investigation. The works can come from one category or any combination of multiple categories.

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in the study areas funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). REU Sites meaningfully engage groups of about 10 to 12 students in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed for the REU program. Students receive stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Students supported through NSF must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its territories. Students who do not meet this requirement may still be considered for participation through other sources of funding available at the REU Sites.

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) -- Deadline: January 22, 2024 11:59pm EST

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy, is a 10-week summer internship program that provides opportunities to minority and female students who are pursuing degrees in science, technology (IT), engineering, or mathematics (STEM majors). Candidates who are selected will have the opportunity to work on focused research projects consistent with the mission of the Office of Fossil Energy.

During the 10 weeks, students will work at one of several locations. At the conclusion of the internship, students will attend a "Technical Forum" where they will present their research project and tour several technical sites located nearby (the location of the technical forum changes every year).

Candidates will receive a paid stipend during the program, in addition to approved transportation expenses to and from the internship site and technical forum location. The MLEF program allows students to gain valuable experience in DOE/FE mission-related research programs, and offers an "inside view" of federal employment which encourages students to consider future opportunities within the Department of Energy.

Design Matters Camp

The University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design is hosting a week-long summer camp. High school students from around the world can learn innovation and invention skills at our overnight summer camp, Design Matters.  Please see their website for more details and share with your students:

Multiple full and/or partial scholarships will be awarded for the Design Matters 2020 Camp. The competition is open to high school students up to age 17.

TIP Pre-Law -- TN Residents - Deadline: March 15, 2024

To help achieve diversity in the classroom, during the summer the University of Memphis School of Law operates the Tennessee Institute for Pre-Law (TIP) program. The TIP program is for Tennessee residents (and Border County residents at the University of Memphis School of Law) who are not admitted through the regular admissions process, but who show potential for the study of law and bring diversity to the class. TIP seeks to matriculate students from diverse backgrounds and circumstances who are capable of successfully participating in law school curricular and co-curricular programs.
 

To apply for TIP, you must go through our regular application process through the LSAC and our priority deadline is March, 15, 2024.  Additionally, you must complete the TIP portion of the application to be considered.  More information on TIP can be found here.

How do I apply to TIP? The TIP application is incorporated into the application for admission. To be considered for TIP applicants must answer the optional application questions and submit a supplemental statement explaining why you believe you are qualified for the program and how you will bring diversity to the law school entering class. The application deadline is March 15. There is no separate application fee for TIP.

Our goal for Diversity Day this year is simple—provide information about law school, how to prepare for law school, and  elevate diversity in the legal profession by bringing together the Law School, prospective students, and Memphis legal community. The Mayo Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program, sponsored by Mayo Graduate School, is a great way to build your skills as a young scientist or test your inclinations toward research.

Each year, 80-90 undergraduate students from around the United States come to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., to work beside both young and established scientists on a broad range of biomedical research questions. A limited number of fellowships are also available at the Mayo Clinic campuses in Jacksonville, Florida and Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program award is $4,000 (minus taxes) for 10 weeks. From this stipend, students are responsible for their own travel, housing and meals. Most students live together in a convenient summer student housing area which costs about $140/week.
