The Children’s Scholarship Fund Program

The Children's Scholarship Fund provides partial tuition assistance for low-income families to send their children to private schools. More than 96,000 children have benefited from scholarships across the United States since we began offering assistance in 1998. Currently, almost 29,000 children nationwide are using CSF scholarships. These children are attending private school through the generosity of our donors, the efforts of 38 scholarship programs, and the sacrifices made by the families themselves, who pay—on average—50% of their children's tuition. Our scholarships are truly a hand up, and not a hand out.

The response from families seeking the freedom to choose their children’s education was staggering. For our first scholarships in 1999, the parents of nearly 1.25 million eligible children from over 20,000 communities applied. Most of these families reside in the poorest sections of our urban areas, where their only choice without a scholarship is a low-performing school.

Eligible families are required to demonstrate their financial need as measured by standards similar to the Federal school lunch program, which takes into account family size. The Fund focuses on elementary education because the earlier a child receives sound schooling, the better. Scholarships are awarded to all eligible children in a family to attend the school or schools of their choice.

The Children's Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for children grades Kindergarten - 8th. Children must be 5 years or older to receive scholarships.

Keep My TN Home: Helping Tennesseans Stay in Their Homes

The Keep My Tennessee Home - Tennessee’s Hardest Hit Fund program provides loans to unemployed or substantially underemployed homeowners who, through no fault of their own, are financially unable to make their mortgage payments and are in danger of losing their homes to foreclosure. Tennessee is one of 18 states plus the District of Columbia that are receiving Hardest Hit Funds due to having an unemployment rate that is higher than the national average. The Keep My Tennessee Home program will make homeowners’ payments on their mortgage and mortgage related expenses such as property taxes, homeowner insurance, homeowner association dues, and/or past-due mortgage payments that accumulated during a period of unemployment. The Hardest Hit Fund is being administered in Tennessee by the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA).

Homeowners in Shelby County are potentially eligible for forgivable loans of up to $20,000 to cover up to 18 months of mortgage expenses.

It is Time to Get Serious About the ACT/SAT

I also wanted to make sure that the “Class of 2014” or those students needing to prepare for the upcoming ACT and SAT that they have information that allows them to perform or do the best that he or she can. It is my hope that you will share the information with others so that they can prepare for the exam(s) as well. The opportunity should always be shared with the individuals wanting to take the ACT/SAT; be it “Class of 2013”, GED or non-Traditional students because college is open to all regardless of age, career or profession.

I am often reminded of the students that I and others have assisted or guided in workshops or through advice. Some of the students that stand out are those students that didn’t have a mentor, had low self-esteem or didn’t think that they could pass the exam or could even attend college. I am especially pleased with Julian’s story. A student that wanted to attend college, but didn’t believe he could. At the time, Julian had just graduated with the “Class of 2008”, but during August of 2008, he had never applied for college or taken the ACT. But in my meeting with him, I felt he had a fire and desire to want to achieve and had the ability to do so. I advise him how to prepare for the ACT and to utilize the links on my blog, Planning and Preparing for College (Scholarships, Internships, Etc) located at http://www.ctherd.blogspot.com . He took the advice and took the ACT exam and scored a 21 on his first try which allowed him to be eligible for the TN Lottery and get assistance's to attend college.

The reason the workshops were successful is because it taught students’ methods and techniques and to utilize practice exams to build up their test skills and speed. In the end, knowledge is powerful, if used properly.

Below is a link that provides two technique documents (Math and Science) that I summarize from our workshops that I offer as tips along with suggested websites to practice the ACT/SAT with.

How to Prepare for the ACT/SAT

I encourage students to take 3 to 4 days a week with 2-3 hours per day and to complete your online test. Performing these practices will allow you to understand the exams better and to build up your timing and able to complete the full exam. If a student doesn't understand how to solve the problems or get the answer then they should seek additional help through their teachers at school, an expert in the subject area, etc. The key is to learn the method/techniques to solve the problems or questions.

As parents, when our kids started to use the Internet more and more, we did what any good parent would do – we monitored their online activity.

Teen Acronym Only” database on the net. Teen Chat Decoder was designed to help parents understand what their kids were “really” saying online and to help keep them safe.


We reviewed their browser history, or some parental control software product like PC Tattletale. But it was really frustrating when we found that our kids used abbreviations and acronyms in when chatting online or via their cell phones.

Now some acronyms are pretty easy to figure out, like “LOL” (Laugh Out Loud), but many made no sense at all – unless you were 15!

How To Factor by Grouping using the AC Formula

To factor a polynomial you must reduce the polynomial expression to its factors.   We are going to use a method known as the 'ac' method to factor by grouping. Many people do not realize that there is actually a systematic way to factor by grouping. This is the closes thing to a 'formula' that you will find for factoring by grouping. It is always much easier to look at some example problems before reading generalized steps, but the steps go as follows:

Step 1) Determine the product of AC (the coefficients in a quadratic equation)
Step 2) Determine what factors of AC sum to B.
Step 3) "ungroup" the middle term to become the sum of the factors found in step 2

It is Never Too Late

I wanted to send out a note to the "Class of 2013" and past classes or anyone that need to know that it is never too late to go for your goal(s) in life. Many times we have our eyes toward getting the students graduated, but not looking beyond at those who felt that they can't go to college or get a decent job, or those who didn't make the requirements to graduate, but just dropped out.

I am told that life doesn't end after high school graduation, but it is the beginning of you starting your future to adulthood. Question: If we are given 3 scores and 10 years, what happens to the other 52 years after high school graduation? High schools students only use up less than one third of the years at graduation, but we acted as if it is completely over for that student or child that didn't graduate or who didn't decide to go to college until after graduation.

WHAT COLLEGE COACHES NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU

The Athletic Scholarships Page lists colleges and universities, by state, in alphabetical order. After the name of each college or university, you will find two links; one to the intercollegiate athletics page of the college or university, another to either an online questionnaire to submit to coaches or a website with coaches' email addresses. In some instances, you will find both an online student-athlete questionnaire and a list of coaches' email addresses.

Most online student-athlete questionnaires are very straightforward. All you'll need to do is provide the information called for as completely and accurately as possible.

If you use a coach's email address to send him or her an email, we recommend that you:

 I just came across this amazing book called 101 Things To Do Before You Graduate (http://www.101grads.com/). #37 is start a website or blog. Check! I’m surprised by how many of them I’ve done naturally by chance, but there are ton more that I still want to do. These are all unconventional things that you normally wouldn’t think about, but in hindsight, they all have a purpose.

ERCA is a non-profit corporation that awards student scholarships and conducts voluntary surveys of high school and middle school students throughout the United States. ERCA provides a minimum of 25 scholarships per year to deserving high school students. The scholarship awards recognize and reward high school students who have made an extraordinary contribution to their community and/or high school and are not based upon financial need.

The ERCA Community Contribution Scholarship Competition (the “Competition”) is open to all high school students who are legal residents of the United States. Applicants must have recognized a need or problem in their community, have determined a way to address this need or solve this problem, have developed an action plan, and have worked to put the action plan in place so as to address the need or solve the problem. The action plan must be a unique project developed by the student, not a project developed by an established group of which the student is a member.

All applicants under the age of eighteen (18) or minors at the time of application must have the permission of at least one (1) of their parents and/or legal guardians to apply. By applying, applicants
and/or their parents or legal guardians (if such applicants are minors) agree to accept and be bound by all terms of these Official Rules and Regulations ("Official Rules"). Employees (and their immediate families and household members, whether or not related) of Educational Research Center of America, (ERCA), their parent, subsidiary or affiliated entities, advertising or promotion agencies, are not eligible to apply or win. Void where prohibited. Competition is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws.

Application process is from July 29, 2013 through July 11, 2014 (application period). The application must be postmarked by the application period and received by July 31 2012. There is a $3.50 processing fee, but it is waived  for AZ, CO, CT, IL, MD, ND, TN & VT.  Also fees will be waived for financial hardships (see rules for details on fee waive(s).  Applications must be postmarked during the Application Period and received by July 22, 2014; applications received after July 22,2014, will be held and submitted for judging in any subsequent competition for 2014/2015

UnitedHealthcare Children Foundation - Free Financial Assistance Grants -- Apply Now!

The UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation is seeking grant applications from families in need of financial assistance to help pay for their child’s health care treatments, services or equipment not covered, or not fully covered, by their commercial health insurance plan.

Qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 to help pay for medical services and equipment such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, counseling services, surgeries, prescriptions, wheelchairs, orthotics, eyeglasses and hearing aids.

The UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity dedicated to facilitating access to medical-related services that have the potential to significantly enhance either the clinical condition or the quality of life of the child and that are not fully covered by the available commercial health benefit plan. This “support” is in the form of a medical grant to be used for medical services not covered or not completely covered by commercial health benefit plans. To be eligible for a grant, children must be 16 years of age or younger. Families must meet economic guidelines, reside in the United States and have a commercial health insurance plan. Grants are available for medical expenses families have incurred 60 days prior to the date of application as well as for ongoing and future medical needs. Parents or legal guardians may apply for grants at http://www.uhccf.org/, and there is no application deadline. Organizations or private donors can make tax-deductible donations to the foundation at this website.

What are the grants?

The grants provide financial relief for families who have children with medical needs not covered or not fully covered by their commercial health benefit plan. The Foundation aims to fill the gap between what medical services/items your child needs and what your commercial health benefit plan will pay for.

In an effort to encourage the youth of America in the pursuit of literary exploration and excellence, and to help provide a venue in which American High School students may share their poetic works; The Live Poets Society of New Jersey presents our 15th annual, National High School Poetry Contest.High School Poetry Contest open to all U S high school students. This year's individual scholarship prizes range from $100 up to $500.

Year Up Free IT Training Information Technology - Apply Now

Free IT Training (Information Technology) for 18-24 year olds who live in the DC, MD, VA, ATL, Boston, etc. If you know any one with a high school diploma or a GED who are between the ages of 18-24 yrs old and have an interest in IT. Refer them to this site: http://www.yearup.org/index.htm. org to learn more about this free program. This program asks for a 1 year commitment between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm.

They provide the student with a stipend and after six months, internships at companies such as Freddie Mac and AOL to name a few. Check out the website.

Year Up is a one-year, intensive training program that provides urban young adults 18-24, with a unique combination of technical and professional skills, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate apprenticeship.

Accreditation of Colleges and Universities

Most people don't take into account the accreditation of a school when applying, but it can play a big role in terms of employment beyond college, in terms of financial aid, transferability of credits, etc. The link provides information about institutions that are accredited by accrediting agencies that are recognized by the US Dept. of Educ:

Accreditation can be quite important in terms of applied sciences and fields such as architecture, medicine, law, and others. There are all types of occupational schools popping up, for-profit institutions, etc. that may be appealing but are not accredited and can negatively affect one's abilities to be licensed to legally practice in areas.

If one is considering transferring or obtaining advanced degrees, insufficient (or otherwise) accreditation can also negatively affect transferability of credits or whether one degree is recognized as valid by a graduate or post graduate institution.
I know less about the financial aid aspects of accreditation, but information is available at the sites above.

One can also use the accreditation information by contacting the accrediting agency to find out if complaints have been filed against a given institution recently, how many complaints, why, etc.

SMW Local 4 Apprenticeship Training -- Apply (In-Person) on July 10, 2012

The Sheet Metal Workers’ Local Union No. 4 apprenticeship program consists of 4 years of on-the-job training and a minimum number of hours per year of classroom instruction. Apprenticeship programs provide comprehensive instructions in both sheet metal fabrication and installation. On the job, apprentices learn the basics of pattern layout and how to cut, bend, fabricate, and install sheet metal products. In the classroom, apprentices learn drafting (CAD), plan and specification reading, trigonometry and geometry applicable to layout work, welding, and the principles of heating, air-conditioning, and ventilating systems. Location is in Memphis, TN. Check other training locations throughout the United States to see if they have the apprenticeship program.
